FAQ: When are we ready to start a SOC 2 Type 2 reporting period?

Discuss the start date with the auditor after the in-scope controls are implemented and evidence collection is working. Check actual operation: can you retrieve an access approval, a completed review, and a change record without recreating them? Confirm that scheduled controls have owners and that missing evidence will be noticed. A signed policy or a green dashboard alone is a weak readiness signal. Type 2 addresses operation over a period, so distinguish the reporting period from the time spent preparing for it. Do not backdate approvals or assume a new tool can reconstruct every historical activity.

Additional FAQs

How often is a SOC 2 audit required?

The timing depends on customer and contractual requirements, not a universal certificate expiry date. Ask customers what report age and coverage period they accept, and check contractual requirements. Then agree
