SOC 1 Report

Reviewed and corrected October 30, 2026. The original publication date is retained.

A SOC 1 report addresses controls at a service organization that are likely to be relevant to its customers’ internal control over financial reporting. It helps those customers and their auditors understand relevant outsourced processes. The AICPA SOC 1 overview explains that scope.

When Might SOC 1 Be Relevant?

Example Scenario: A company uses an outside payroll processor. Controls over authorized employee changes, payroll calculations, and processing may affect the company’s financial records. A SOC 1 report can provide information about the relevant service-organization controls.

The provider’s industry name alone does not determine the answer. Identify the actual service, how it affects customer financial reporting, and what the customer and its auditor need.

What Type of Report Is Needed?

A Type 1 report addresses the system description and suitability of control design at a specified date. Type 2 also addresses operating effectiveness over a specified period. Confirm the requested scope and coverage rather than assuming one report type meets every need.

See our Type 1 background guide and preparation checklist for the next questions to ask.

How Does This Relate to SSAE 16 and SSAE 18?

Older articles may call this an SSAE 16 report or refer to the earlier SAS 70 standard. SSAE 18 superseded SSAE 16 as part of a broader recodification of attestation standards. Current SOC 1 engagements use the applicable attestation standards as amended, including AT-C section 320.

SOC 2 addresses a different assurance objective using applicable Trust Services Criteria. It does not replace the need to determine whether financial-reporting controls are the relevant concern. Our SOC 2 resources explain that reporting option.

  4. The difference between an effective person and others is not a deficiency of durability, not a deficiency of know-how, but rather a deficiency of will. Hopefully our employees can keep up their tasks so we don’t have any issues in our reports or their may be a deficiency in employment instead!
